UX Case Study

An app that provides users a way to discover organizations or causes, to get involved in and around their locality or any location based on their preference.

Context

The idea here is to create an app that can make it easy for people to volunteer for various NGOs and make it easy for them to explore the right opportunities to volunteer. The app has to be conceptualised around Indian audience of all ages making it accessible for everyone with a basic Internet connection and a smart phone.

Goal

To deliver a product that

  1. Gives a seamless experience to its users for opportunities to volunteer in and around their location
  2. Makes it easy for them to find and explore different activities where they can volunteer in any way possible
  3. Gives a clear-cut idea to the user as to what kind of activity they are going to get involved in
  4. Incentivizes a user to make them come back to the product again to volunteer

Design Process

Research

I conducted 4 one-on-one interviews, 2 of them were with regularly participating volunteers, 1 with a subject matter expert who also runs a non profit, and 1 with a general student who is interested to volunteer.
Through some analytical reports that a non profit owner provided me, from the interviews I took and through many online forums, I got some insights on the majority volunteering demographic and some important data.

Personas

With all the data points collected from the research, I started sketching some user personas which can be accounted as a majority figure in the products customer group

Flows

With all the key data collected and defined, I had a clear cut idea on how the flow of the product should go through and created some wireframes, also defined some set features for the product

Wireframes & Features

A Basic set of onboarding screens on first time app launch where we tell the user what and how they can be helpful.
Also to appreciate the user for taking a step further to help others selflessly.

Only Facebook or google sign-in is available to make it easy for one-tap registration.
A quick form, to make it easier to register easily for activities, or they can skip it and, will be able to fill in at the time of registering for an activity.

Main Search
The bottom bar will contain Search || Upcoming Events || Appreciation || Account
The search is a global search, and the results show on screen on first load are always location based taken from the quick form, in case the form is not filled, the app will ask to turn on the phone’s location.
Filters will have TIME || MONEY || ALL || Custom filter options.
The item card will contain the location, time and date, duration, and the positions remaining for the task.
A quick register button will be available, tapping on the card will expand into an individual screen with more details.
Also a share option is available if they want to invite their friends.

Appreciation
The appreciation bar is to let the user know what kind of impact they have created by performing these tasks for NGO’s.
First I was going for a point based reward system for each task, but it gamified the whole process, and with some further research decided to rather show the user in quantifiable numbers, what they have done for others selflessly.
Increasing this number could trigger a person to come back again and volunteer.
Also a share button is available to share these numbers to social media and inspire others to do the same.
